History

Based in California, Anuradha Foundation believes a strong educational foundation that encompasses mental and emotional well-being is necessary for success in life. We believe that early childhood intervention programs where every child is provided with the opportunity to learn in a caring environment is crucial to their overall development. The overall development which includes academic, mental health and physical well-being should go hand-in-hand. Most of the schools put emphasis on the academic and neglect the mental health of the child. With depression and suicide rates soaring among children and teenagers the issue of mental well-being needs to be urgently addressed. As we realized the importance and the impact of mental well-being among children, Anuradha Foundation decided to support education projects and promote mental health awareness among the vulnerable populations.

With this vision we started the first education project with Prasanna Jyothi, an orphanage for girls in Bangalore, in 2004. To promote mental health awareness we started working with Sampark and GASS, two well-established community organizations in the semi-urban and rural areas. These two organizations created awareness and established community and family mental health programs. We continued funding mental health care projects until 2010. Our current focus is on pre-school and elementary education and we are working with Akshara Foundation on a pilot project to fund pre-schools in non-notified slums in Bangalore.

Below is a list of the projects that were funded by Anuradha Foundation:

  • Prasanna Jyothi Educational Trust (Puttanahalli, Bangalore): a child welfare activity program.
  • St John's Medical College Hospital (Anekal, rural Bangalore) : An innovative clinical study on depression in semi-urban women
  • GASS (Grameena Abyudaya Seva Samsthe) Rural Karnataka: a community based rehabilitation project
  • Sampark (Koppal, North Karnataka): a community mental health project.
  • Chaitanya (Bangalore city): a community mental-health rehabilitation project
